The major objective of the Centre has been to provide research and analytical support on a continuous basis to the Department of Commerce on identified issues pertaining to the World Trade Organization. In addition, it is also tasked to carry out research activities, bring out Publications on WTO related subjects, carry out Outreach & Capacity Building programmes by organizing seminars, workshops, subject specific meetings etc., and to be a repository of important WTO documents in its Trade Resource Centre.

Recognising the role of innovations, R&D and technology for the growth and competitiveness of trade and industry in a knowledge based economy, the Centre for International Trade and Technology (CITT) has been set up in 2001 at IIFT with the active technical and financial support of Ministry of Science & Technology, DSIR, GoI. The CITT primarily aims to promote the technology business through policy research, capacity building, dissemination of information and networking and collaborations.

The model envisaged for the SME Centre reinforces IIFT’s basic philosophy of integrating research and training for the benefit of the SMEs with a special focus on Internationalisation of SMEs. This will be complementary to the current activities of other Institutions in this regard. The center plays a pivot role of knowledge partner in all its activities to provide and disseminate the latest developments affecting the sector.

Commodities combines the best of near real-time spot prices and market intelligence, historical fundamental data and robust forecasts for agricultural crops. This is the ideal database for investors into the commodities markets in India, for banks and non-banking finance companies who finance warehousing and logistics companies in the space of agricultural commodities.

Commodities trading in India involves a bewildering array of commodity varieties that are traded in hundreds of markets. Markets vary from the modern futures exchanges to the traditional local markets in the interiors of India.

CMIE excels in streamlining the data generated from this amazing kaleidoscope and render it in an easily usable manner.

Commodities delivers prices data on 200 varieties of 70 commodities from 150 markets.

CMIE has its own price-polling and market intelligence gathering infrastructure. This is supplemented with price data obtained from official sources and from the commodity exchanges.

Commodities provides time-series data on area, production, yield, value of output of agricultural crops and weekly updates on progress of sowing. This is the most comprehensive source of fundamental data on crops in India.

Besides delivering copious historical data, Commodities also provides forecasts for area, production and yield of crops. These forecasts are generated by researchers at CMIE and are based on quantitative analysis and a close and continuous monitoring of prices, sowing and the weather.

    (b)   Economic Outlook

The Economic Outlook provides CMIE's view on where the Indian economy stands and where it is likely headed. This view is derived from a careful and continuous monitoring of all new data releases. New data releases are analysed in real-time in the context of the historical trends and in the context of other current data releases. Economic Outlook therefore provides a comprehensive and integrated view of the Indian economy.

Every data release is dealt with at three levels - Tidings, which is a quick delivery of the facts, Insights, which is a deeper and contextual analysis of the new data release and, Outlook, which is a forward looking essay that describes the implications of the new data release.

The core strength of the Economic Outlook is the underlying database. The service provides full access to this database. Time series on more than a 410,000 indicators are provided in multiple frequencies and in the form of several derivations. The full set of indicators including all frequencies and derivations add up to nearly a million time-series. All these are presented in intelligently laid-out tabulations.

Tabulations are supported with readymade graphics and also a graphing tool. The data can be easily downloaded into spreadsheets or as csv files.

CMIE's statistical forecasts are provided in separate tabulations.

Economic Outlook also provides scanned images of the original source documents used in building the time-series.

  4.     COMTRADE

The United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade) contains detailed imports and exports statistics reported by statistical authorities of close to 200 countries or areas. It concerns annual trade data from 1962 to the most recent year. UN Comtrade is considered the most comprehensive trade database available with more than 1 billion records. A typical record is – for instance – the exports of cars from Germany to the United States in 2004 in terms of value (US dollars), weight and supplementary quantity (number of cars). The database is continuously updated. Whenever trade data are received from the national authorities, they are standardized by the UN Statistics Division and then added to UN Comtrade.

         Limitations

UN Comtrade is available to the general public and should be used with good knowledge of its limitations. Please read the following points very carefully before extracting and using data:

  • Countries (or areas) do not necessarily report their trade statistics for each and every year. This means that aggregations of data into groups of countries may involve countries with no reported data for a specific year. UN Comtrade does not contain estimates for missing data. Therefore, trade of a country group could be understated due to unavailability of some country data.
  • Data are made available in several commodity classifications, but not all countries necessarily report in the most recent commodity classification. Again, UN Comtrade does not contain estimates for data of countries which do not report in the most recent classification.
  • When data are converted from a more recent to an older classification it may occur that some of the converted commodity codes contain more (or less) products than what is implied by the official commodity heading. No adjustments are made for these cases.
  • Imports reported by one country do not coincide with exports reported by its trading partner. Differences are due to various factors including valuation (imports CIF, exports FOB), differences in inclusions/ exclusions of particular commodities, timing etc. The recommendations for international merchandise trade statistics can be found in the International Merchandise Trade Statistics: Compilers Manual ). Additional methodological information can be found on the same web page.
  • Almost all countries report as partner country for imports the country of origin (see Metadata & References > Explanatory Notes) which is determined by the rules of origin established by each country (see International Merchandise Trade Statistics, Concepts and Definitions, Rev.2, para. 139 and 140). Hence, the term ‘partner country’ in the case of imports does not necessarily imply any direct trading relationship.
